A Bicycle is beauty, speed, utility, craft, self expression

Object of Desire

I fell in love with bicycles over the last year after discovering Neighborhood Bike Works' open workshop hours. As I replaced handlebars, adjusted break pads, and changed my cotter pin, I slowly learned more about my bike.

This publication is meant to be universally accessible, appealing novices or pros who enjoy working on their bike. It shows that the mastery of a craft is just as beautiful as the mystery.

The complex silhouettes gain value as the reader learns about bicycles. They start as purely visual, aesthetic forms. But with more information, they become puzzles, a game to piece together what is going on. The labels act as clues to bridge the gap between novices and experts.

Essays from Peter Flax narratively tie together various technical descriptions, part lists, charts, and diagrams. The many layers of information create an intricate type system and elegant moments throughout the publication.
