The Drexel Ultimate team has been a great opportunity for fun design. I joined the team to stay active, but caught on that I add to the team by helping with the social media and other needs.
Creating the design system posed an interesting challenge. The team is associated with Drexel and needs to fit with the already expansive design system associated with the university, but I also wanted to give the team it’s own voice, stand out from the university’s other graphics. I solved this by using elements defined by Drexel’s system, but stretching the other rules of the system. The best example of this is the heavy Futura copy, Futura is in the original design system, but the Extra Bold Oblique style is not specifically encouraged. The font is never used by Drexel themselves, but staying in the typeface family holds that connection back to the university. (I would also be naive to not give credit to color for doing most of the heavy lifting)
